Chapter 6: Molecular Compounds and Acids
2
Molecular compounds Sometimes elements don’t need to lose or gain electrons to satisfy the octet rule In a molecular compound, atoms SHARE electrons rather than TRANSFER them Weaker bond: lower melting and boiling points
3
What does this mean for me?
In molecular compounds, there are NO IONS! (no charges, no roman numerals, no polyatomic ions) Instead we will use prefixes to name them
4
Prefixes!
5
How to name a molecular compound
Rules: Write the name of each element with the correct prefix in front of it Change the ending of the SECOND element to “ide” Never put “mono” in front of the first element EX: CCl4 = Carbon tetrachloride
6
How to Write a molecular Formula from the Name
Rules: Take the prefix and the name and turn it into a symbol and subscript Ex: Trisulfur S3
7
Some Examples
8
Let’s Try it!
9
Acids: Compounds that begin with H!
10
Ternary Acids (acids with polyatomic ions)
I “ate” so much I got “ic” The “whITE hOUSe”
11
Helpful reminder!
12
Let’s Try IT! HBr: ______________ carbonic acid:________
HNO3: ____________ hydroiodic acid: _______ H2SO3: ____________ phosphorous acid: _____
