a. Develop and use a model to compare and contrast pure substances (elements and compounds) and mixtures. (Clarification statement: Include heterogeneous and homogeneous mixtures. Types of bonds and compounds will be addressed in high school physical science.)

The tiny particles that are the basic building blocks of all matter. 
Atoms can be combined with other atoms to form molecules,
They cannot be divided into smaller parts by ordinary means.

A Particle made of two or more atoms joined by chemical bonds.

A pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined giving them different properties.

A substance that is made of only one type of atom or only one type of molecule.

11. Heterogeneous Mixtures
A heterogeneous mixture is made of different substances that remain physically separate. 
You can see the individual parts.

A mixture which has uniform composition and properties throughout. You can not see individual parts
Example: Air, Salt Water
