What light do these documents shed on the much-debated question about who should be held responsible for the tragedy of the Atlantic slave trade?

Annotate for the following… How does the author describe the kind of slavery he knew in Africa? What part did Africans play in the slave trade according to the author? What aspects of the shipboard experience contributed to the slaves’ despair?

Describe the economic transactions described in the document?. To what extent were they conducted between equal parties and who, if anyone, held the upper hand in the dealings? How might an African merchant have described the same transaction? How might Equiano have described it?

What do the documents say about responsibility and blame for the tragedy of the Atlantic slave trade? Who is at the forefront of this industry? With your crew, look through the documents and find specific quotes, parts of images, parts of the data tables, that answer this question. BRAINSTORM Write down different qutoes/ideas about blame and responsibility. These could be possible main points for students in their essay.
