11 The Louisiana Purchase
By 1800, More than One million settlers lived between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River. Most Western Settlers were Farmers. Why was the Mississippi River so important to these settlers? Because the farmers used the river to transport their products to New Orleans, and then ship out to the east.
