9. ‘Just War Theory’
St. Augustine ( AD) originally came up with the idea of ‘Just War'. He created a list of principles which could make a war be justified.
The Christian thinker St. Thomas Aquinas (1255 – 1274 AD) later added to this list.
More recently, the United Nations added to this and produced a list of reasons to justify going to war.

12. The war must be fought by a PROPER AUTHORITY like the United Nations.
The politicians must make the most important decisions 1

13. 2 The war must be fought for a JUST CAUSE
JUST = the war must be started for a good reason – e.g. self-defense, and not because of greed. 2

14. 3 It must be fought with the intention to RESTORE PEACE
A war can be fought if it is believed that it would prevent a greater evil. 3

15. 4 There must be a REASONABLE CHANCE OF SUCCESS.
You cannot go to war and waste the lives of brave soldiers for something which you have very little chance of winning; lives should not be wasted. 4

16. A war is just if it is begun as the LAST RESORT, all non-violent means of solving the conflict must have been tried and failed before you turn to war 5

17. 6 The war must be conducted using PROPORTIONAL FORCE.
It would not be proportional to use a nuclear weapon on a small country for invading a small island. 6

18. 7 There must be CONTROLLED VIOLENCE.
Every effort must be made to make sure that as little violence as possible is used to achieve victory and methods should AVOID KILLING CIVILIANS 7

(A* - A)6 Marks = 2 clearly developed reasons why the candidate agrees/disagrees AND 2 clearly developed reasons why someone would disagree with them. Reference to religious views. Clear understanding of the JWT
(B) 5 Marks = 2 clearly developed reasons why the candidate agrees/disagrees AND 1 clearly developed reason why someone would disagree with them. Good understanding of the JWT
(C) 4 Marks = 2 clearly developed reasons why the candidate agrees/disagrees . Reference to the JWT
(D) 2 Marks = 1 clearly developed reason why the candidate agrees/disagrees. Reference to the JWT
(E) 1 Mark = A simple statement suggesting whether the candidate agrees/disagrees. No reference to JWT
