Matter Anything that has mass and takes up space.

Substance A pure form of matter.
Cannot be separated by physically means.

Element A substance that contains only one kind of atom.
The symbol only has one capital letter. Is on the Periodic Table.

Compound A substance that has two or more types of atoms that are chemically combined. That cannot be separated by physical means. The chemical formula contains two or more compounds. C6H12O6 NaCl

Mixture A combination of two or more substances.
They can be physically separated.

Homogeneous Mixture A mixture that is evenly mixed throughout.
Looks the same from top, center, and bottom.

Heterogeneous Mixture
A mixture that is not evenly mixed. Does not look the same top, center, and bottom.
