Discussion Question #1 Explain why some of the sections of the poem are in italics.
9
Model PPEC Answer Noyes italicizes the final two stanzas to show that the relationship between the Highwayman and Bess continues after death. After he explains the atmosphere, he writes, “A highwayman comes riding-/Riding-riding-/A highwayman comes riding, up to the old inn-door” (94-6). These lines are repeated from the opening of the poem; however, Noyes uses the present tense here and the past tense at the beginning of the poem. The repetition and shift in verb tense emphasize the continuation of their relationship after death.
10
Discussion Question #2 If you were making a movie of this poem, who would you cast as Bess, as the Highwayman, and as Tim, the ostler? Explain your reasons.
11
Discussion Question #3 Explain how the poet uses foreshadowing to prepare the reader for later events in the poem. Assess whether the foreshadowing increases the reader’s interest and suspense or undermines the impact of the final events in the poem.
12
Model PPEC Answer Bess’s death is foreshadowed early in the poem. As proof, in the third stanza, Bess is described as “plaiting a dark red love-knot into her long black hair” (18). This dark red ribbon symbolizes Bess’ blood. In this way, the red ribbon foreshadows the blood that runs down her when she shoots herself. Therefore, Noyes foreshadows Bess’ tragic fate at the beginning of the poem.
13
Discussion Question #4 This poem is famous for its use of metaphor, simile, rhythm, onomatopoeia, and repetition. Find an example of each of these poetic devices in the poem and explain your choices.
14
Model PPEC Answer Noyes uses a metaphor to describe Tim. As proof, when Tim eavesdrops on the conversation between Bess and the Highwayman, the speaker says, “his eyes were hollows of madness” (21). This metaphor emphasizes the depth of Tim’s insanity. His eyes and soul are empty. Thus, Noyes uses a metaphor to provide the disturbing characterization of Tim.
