Sin in the World and the Wrath of God Romans 1:18-32

Review The Good: for the believer salvation 1:14-17 The Bad:
for the wicked anger 1:18-32 The Ugly: for the hypocrite condemnation 2:1–3:20

The Bad News v18-19a, 24a “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them … Therefore God gave them over…” God’s nature is revealed by creation, his anger is revealed by sin God’s power is against the wicked as much as is it for the believer.

God’s Wrath v18a “The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people” God’s longstanding hatred of sin – a “slow burn” God’s anger is a natural companion of his great love Romans 12:9 “Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.”

The World’s Sin v18b “the godlessness and wickedness of people who suppress the truth by their wickedness” v21-23 “For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. … they exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.” Godlessness - lack of reverence Wickedness - lack of righteousness

No Excuse v19-20 “since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities — his eternal power and divine nature — have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” Instead of seeing God in creation, they make Gods from creation

God’s Response v24a “Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts” Passive - God allows choice Active God reveals consequences

The Slippery Slope v21 “Their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened” v24 “Therefore God game them over…” sexual impurity, idolatry misusing things God created v26 “Because of this God gave them over…” shameful lusts, unnatural acts things God never intended v28 “Furthermore … God gave them over…” every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity total lack of restraint

The Result v32 “Although they know God’s righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.”
