Exposition - The beginning - Characters & Setting are established
- Conflict is introduced

Rising Action - The main conflict is dealt with by some kind of action
- The main character is in crisis - Events leading up to the climax

Climax - Main event or danger that the character faces
- The turning point in the story - Main event or danger that the character faces - It looks as if the character will fail

Falling Action - The story begins to slowly wind down
- Shows the result of the actions or decisions the character has made - Usually leads to the resolution

Resolution - The conclusion of the story
- Conflicts are resolved & all loose ends are tied up - The story concludes with either a happy or sad ending

How do I put events on a Plot Line?
1. Review the events from the story. 2. Highlight the most important events. 3. Decide what the exposition, climax, and resolution are first. 4. Then determine the rising action (2-3 events) and falling action.

Events from “Robot Dreams”
Put these events IN ORDER of a Plot Line: When questioned, Elvex admits he was the man in the dream. (Climax) Dr. Rash’s position with the company will now change due to this occurrence. (Falling Action) Dr. Rash informs Dr. Calvin that one of the company’s robots, LVX-1, experiences a human dream. (Exposition) Elvex shares that in the dream all robots were led by a man in revolt and that the three laws of robotics were replaced by one law: robots must protect their own existence. (Rising Action) Dr. Calvin immediately destroys the robot. (Resolution)
