What is Density? Density – is a comparison of the measurements of how much matter (mass) is contained in the space (volume) of a substance or object. It tells you how many particles are packed into a certain amount of room. It tells you how crammed together the particles of a substance or object are.

Visualizing Density It’s crowded in here! Imagine an empty amount of space. This space has no density since there are no particles inside. Let’s put some particles in. If you mean our density has increased, you’re right. Now there are two particles sharing that space. The more particles that go into that space… the more crowded it gets, and the greater the density becomes.

Peace. Gotta bounce. If some of the particles left. The remaining particles would be less crowded. They would be less densely packed. Ahhh! The less of the space the particles are taking up, the less densely packed they are, and the lower the density is.

The size of the particles matters also. Check out the examples below: If the particles in the space on the right shrunk, how would the densities compare? The density of the particles and space on the right would be less, because the particles take up less of the available space.

What happens if the volume changes? Check out the examples below: If the space on the right became greater, how would the densities compare? When the space (volume) increases, the particles can spread out more… …and they are less densely packed.

Introduction to Density Summary
Density is a ratio (comparison) of two measurements: mass and volume The more a substance’s or object’s space (volume) is filled with matter (particles) the more dense that substance or object is. The less a substance’s or object’s space (volume) is filled with matter (particles) the less dense that substance or object is.
