Journal #24 Write down as many positive things about how you perceive yourself and your body image. Write down as many things about your body image you view as negative. ALSO, fill out Sleep Journal

2 Lets find our BMI Take the BMI worksheet and go find your:

3 BMI Body Mass Index (BMI) is a number calculated from a person's weight and height. BMI provides a reliable indicator of body fatness for most people and is used to screen for weight categories that may lead to health problems.  In recent years, more researchers argue that it's not the most accurate way to measure body weight. For years, scientists have said that BMI can't distinguish between fat and muscle, which tends to be heavier and can tip more toned individuals into overweight status, even if their fat levels are low

8 Ideal Bodies Body Image

9 Body Image The way a person perceives how his or her body looks is called Body Image. Usually a person compares their body to that of an IDEAL body. Where does society get the idea of what IDEAL looks like? List as many ideal characteristics that you can think of for males and females.

Male -Muscular -Tan -Chiseled -Well proportioned -Broad shoulders and thin waist Female -Thin -Toned -Tan -Tall to medium height -Proportional -Large breasts -Backside

2) Posture 3) Amount of body fat 4) Muscle tone

13 In reality…. Marilyn Monroe wore a size 14
Models 20 years ago weighed 8% less than the average woman. Today they weigh 23% less than the average woman. Male action figures (GI Joe, etc.) have greatly increased in muscular size since 1973; If GI Joe were human, he would have larger biceps than any bodybuilder in history.

16 In reality…. Underweight males have body images just as negative as overweight women’s body images. In one U.S. National survey, women feared being fat more than dying If Barbie was a real woman, she’d have to walk on all fours due to her proportions.

20 Questions How do you think body image contributes to a person’s self esteem, negatively and or positively? How do other people hinder a person’s self concept and body image? Can a person have a negative body image even though their physical body is well proportioned and physically appealing? How does society contribute to the idea of ideal body features etc?
