3 Presidential Powers The president is the most powerful public official in the United States. Duties include: Enforce Laws Veto Bills Call Congress into special session Commander in Chief Receives Ambassadors Makes treaties Appoints top government officials (cabinet, ambassadors, judges) with Senate approval Pardon people convicted of federal crimes Issues a “State of the Union” speech every year

8 Legislative Leader The president can propose a new law
The president will lobby for the law by making speeches and meeting with key senators and representatives

9 Economic Leader Plans the federal government’s budget
Tries to help the economy prosper –we have a mixed economy - we have private companies, but some government regulation The unemployment rate is a primary concern for the president. It’s currently at 7.5%.
