Causes of the Civil War Compromise of 1850 Kansas-Nebraska Act
States’ Rights South- states should have more power. States have right to secede North- Believes in strong Fed. Gov’t. and secession is unconstitutional Slavery South- slavery is a state issue and necessary to maintain the Southern Economy. Felt slaves treated well. North- Mostly opposed, but not willing to outlaw it. Most wanted to stop its spread Economy South- farmers and plantation owners oppose protective tariff. Feel it favors northern industry at expense of southerners. North- factory workers, shippers favor tariff to make American industry on equal footing with foreign competitors. Causes of the Civil War Abolitionist Movement South- protected slavery as way of life. Abolitionists need to mind own business. North- became catalyst (cause) for war when John Brown used violence to end slavery Slavery in the Territories Compromise of 1850 Slavery banned in D.C. Fugitive Slave Act strengthened Kansas-Nebraska Act Popular Sovereignty- new states vote to be slave/free Bleeding Kansas
