Standard and Objective
Standard APHG 1B Objective: Students will use the themes of Human-Environment Interaction and Movement as the basis for analyzing the alteration of the Los Angeles River and migration patterns.
6
Movement The theme of Movement studies and identifies the movement of products, people, information, and ideas between all spatial scales.
7
Material Movement Material movement: Involves the movement of products, people, and animals. The movement happens over air, land or water. Examples: - Trucking corn from farms in Iowa to California stores. - People migrating from Mexico to the United States. - Shipping fidget spinners from factories in China to corner stores in South L.A.
8
Non-Material Movement
Non material movement involves the transfer of ideas, energy, and culture from one place to another. These are less visible, but extremely important. Examples: -Mexican culture coming to the United States through migration. -Information transmitted via fiber optic cables across the world instantly. - Electricity run through power lines in a town.
9
Local, Regional, and Global.
Movement People move EVERYWHERE and they move EVERYTHING. Take 3 mins to write one thing that people move at the three spatial scales: Local, Regional, and Global.

Migration is the movement of people from one place to another.
-Read the passage about the history of Los Angeles. Answer the questions on your paper.
13
Human Environment Interaction
Studies: 1) How human activities are influenced by the natural environment. 2) How humans are altering the natural environment to achieve their objectives.
14
Human Environment Interaction
1. The first category of interaction is human adaptation to natural conditions. -Building shelter from the cold and rain - Wearing warm clothing in a cold climate
15
Human Environment Interaction
2.The second category of interaction is human alteration of natural conditions. Whenever humans use their technology to change what nature has provided, they are engaged in alteration.
16
Examples. -Dam rivers -Blast tunnels through mountains
-Release gasses into the atmosphere (global warming) -Mine for minerals -Chop down trees for lumber
17
Stations Two stations: L.A. River History
Read and respond to the questions. Repeat Photography -Analyze the photographs for landscape alteration. Identify physical characteristics
18
Exit Ticket When people come to new places, what are ways they change both the human characteristics of a place, and the physical characteristics?
