1 Southwest Asia Wars 1st Period

2 Persian Gulf War It was a war between Iraq and UN forces led by the US. Saddam Hussein had accused Kuwait of stealing their oil, and invaded Kuwait. Saddam really wanted Kuwait’s oil fields. In January 1991 U.S. and other nations attacked Iraq. The Iraqi government was defeated in less than two months.

3 US Invasion of Afghanistan
Sept. 11, 2001 al-Qaeda (Afghan terrorist group led by Osama bin Laden) hijacked four planes and flew two of them into the World Trade Center in NY. One plane flew into the Pentagon, and the fourth never reached its destination. President George W. Bush called on other countries to help wage a war on terrorism. Oct US and British troops invaded Afghanistan in search of bin Laden. May 2, 2011 bin Laden was killed by the US government.

4 Iraq War Iraq, still under dictator Saddam Hussein, was building weapons of mass destruction according to the US. 2003 US began bombing Iraq (Britain, Australia, and Poland joined us)…this was known as Operation Iraqi Freedom. US forces captured Saddam Hussein, he was tried and sentenced to death for “crimes against humanity.” Saddam was killed in 2006. Over ½ million Iraqis died, 4,000 American soldiers were killed, and more than 20,000 wounded.

Iraq invaded Kuwait (Aug. 1990)because, according to Saddam Hussein, Kuwait was stealing Iraq’s oil. Hussein was really trying to get Kuwait’s oil and the coastline on the Persian Gulf. January 1991 US and UN forces attacked Iraqi forces. The Iraqi army was defeated in less than two months.

Sept. 11, 2001 Osama bin Laden, leader of al-Qaeda, hijacked 4 airplanes and attacked the Twin Towers in NY, and the Pentagon in DC. These terrorist attacks killed nearly 3,000 people. US President George W. Bush called on other countries to wage a war on terrorism. In October 2001, US and British troops invaded Afghanistan in search of bin Laden. May 2, 2011 Osama bin Laden was killed by US military.

8 Iraq War The US was worried that Iraq was building weapons of mass destruction. In 2002 US congress passed the Iraq War Resolution giving permission to proceed with war called Operation Iraqi Freedom. 2003 US began bombing targets in Baghdad, Iraq. Saddam Hussein was captured and sentenced to death for “crimes against humanity.” 4,000 Americans were killed in action, 20,000 Americans were wounded, and more than ½ a million Iraqis were killed

12 Iraq War Saddam Hussein was still president (dictator) of Iraq.
The US government believed Iraq had weapons of mass destruction. March 2003 the US bombed targets in Baghdad, Iraq…this was called Operation Iraqi Freedom Weapons of mass destruction have not been found in Iraq. US forces captured Saddam Hussein. He was tried and sentenced to death for “crimes against humanity.”

14 Persian Gulf Iraq versus US led UN forces
August 1990 Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait because according to him, Kuwait was stealing Iraq’s oil. Saddam was really hoping to take over Kuwait’s oil and their coastline on the Persian Gulf. UN demanded Iraq withdraw from Kuwait. January 1991 US led UN forces attacked Iraq’s army, and defeated Iraq in less than two months.

15 US Invasion of Afghanistan
al-Qaeda, under the leadership of Osama bin Laden, hijacked 4 US planes on Sept. 11, 2001. 2 planes crashed into the Twin Towers, one crashed into the Pentagon, and one crashed in a field before reaching the White House. Nearly 3,000 people were killed. US President George W. Bush called on other countries to help wage a war on terrorism. In October 2001 US and British troops invaded Afghanistan in search of bin Laden. May 2011 US troops located and killed Osama bin Laden.

16 Iraq War The US feared Iraq had weapons of mass destruction.
March 2003 US bombed the Iraqi capital city of Baghdad. Weapons of mass destruction were never found in Iraq. Over ½ million Iraqis died, 4,000 US troops were killed and 20,000 injured. Saddam Hussein was captured by US troops, tried, and sentenced to death for “crimes against humanity.”
