Batteries
2
While there are many different types of batteries, the way they work is the same.
3
Every battery contains 2 electrodes and an electrolyte
Every battery contains 2 electrodes and an electrolyte. Between the electrodes is a spacer that separates them.
4
When a device is hooked up to a battery, a chemical reaction occurs that produces electrical energy.
5
In our battery, the zinc and the copper had a chemical reaction
In our battery, the zinc and the copper had a chemical reaction. This is why you saw the ends of the battery look “different” after they sat in the solution.
6
This reaction causes electrons (tiny parts of atoms) to jump from one electrode to another. Which electrode lost electrons? Which electrode gained electrons? copper zinc
7
How can you tell which gained and which lost?
