Recent growth of quaternary and quinary industry Mechanisation of ag and ind means less employment, Increasing wealth > afford better servicves, better education > R+D, globalisation and foreign competition > decline of secondary industry

Spatial variations Functions of places – determined by economic factors, also by people who live there Comparison between London and North West These can change over time – eg decline of manufacturing industry in northern UK cities, result of globalisation and changes in UK as moved to post industrial economy

Variations in income contribute to variations in health and education – why? Type of job – manual v white collar Diet Housing Ability to afford health and education – also ability to access services Life style choices do play a part though Exacerbated in some areas with concentrations of poverty and BME populations

Changes to places Changes to functions and character of places result of; Globalisation – eg factory closures, migration Changes in accessibility – both in transport and IT – enable homeworking Government plans – eg ‘northern powerhouse’, closure of rail lines in 1960s led to decline of railway towns Growth of north-south divide in UK – with overheated SE and northern towns left behind
