1 Candy Lab

2 Bell Work Read the lab for today
Today’s Labs will count as a Test grade, so make sure that you don’t lose your lab and you answer each question. Put all laptops on the counter by my desk

3 SC Standards 7.P.2A.2: Obtain and use information about elements (including chemical symbol, atomic number, atomic mass, and group/family) to describe the organization of the periodic table. S.1A.8: Obtain and evaluate scientific information to (1) answer questions, (2) explain or describe phenomena, (3) develop models, (4) evaluate hypotheses, explanations, claims, or designs or (5) identify and/or fill gaps in knowledge. Communicate using the conventions and expectations of scientific writing or oral presentations by (1) evaluating grade-appropriate primary or secondary scientific literature, or (2) reporting the results of student experimental investigations. 7.P.2.A Conceptual Understanding: All substances are composed of one or more elements. Elements are pure substances which contain only one kind of atom. The periodic table organizes these elements based on similar properties. Compounds are substances composed of two or more elements. Chemical formulas can be used to describe compounds. 7.P.2A.3: Analyze and interpret data to describe and classify matter as pure substances (elements or compounds) or mixtures (heterogeneous or homogeneous) based on composition. S.1A.4: Analyze and interpret data from informational texts, observations, measurements, or investigations using a range of methods (such as tabulation, graphing, or statistical analysis) to (1) reveal patterns and construct meaning or (2) support hypotheses, explanations, claims, or designs

4 Today’s Objectives (SWBAT)
Obtain and use information from secondary sources about elements to describe the organization of the periodic table. Analyze and interpret data to describe and classify matter as pure substances or mixtures based on composition.

5 3rd and 7th Atomic Diagrams
You will need M&M’s 2 colors 1 color for neutron 1 for protons Sweet Tarts 1 color Air Head (1) Paper Plate Worksheet Blank paper Wipes

6 3rd and 7th Atomic Diagrams
I encourage you all to work in groups Remember to use your group voice, not your outside voice You will follow the directions making models using M&M, Sweet Tarts, and Air Heads Follow the procedures in the lab When you are finished clean up your table Wipe it down with wipes

7 3rd and 7th Worksheets You will need to follow the directions on the worksheet, You may work with the person next to you Use your 6 inch voice

8 4th and 6th Rock Candy Lab You will need 3 Beakers 1 clean plate

11 4th and 6th Rock Candy Lab After the water has started to boil and we have our super saturated sugar mixture I will come and poor it at your desk. You will need to add ½ a spoon full of which ever Kool-Aid packet to the one you labeled for Kool-Aid The I will come and make a unsaturated mixture and poor into the one labeled unsaturated. We need to work fast, but safe Clean up at the end of the lab I will move them to the counter during lunch/end of class
