Matter and Movement
2
Is this guy moving? Why or why not?
3
Is this guy moving? Why are why not?
4
Is the snail moving in this picture?
5
Is the cat moving in this picture?
6
What moved on the lab table?
More importantly, how did you know that it had moved?
7
Motion When an object changes location over time when compared with a reference point (or point of reference). Common reference points include: the Earth’s surface (GPS coordinates), nonmoving items on the Earth’s surface, such as buildings, trees and mountains, the elevator at school.
8
What is average speed?
9
Speed is the rate an object moves over time…
10
How do we measure average speed?
Miles per hour = miles/hr Kilometers per hour = km/hr Meters per second = m/s
11
Average speed is measured:
by your distance (regardless of whether it is miles, kilometers, meters or feet) divided by time (regardless of whether it is hours, minutes or seconds). S = d/t
12
Practice calculating average speed
1. You have no ride but you are walking to North Gwinnett High for a basketball game. You start from your friend’s house which is 5 miles from the high school and you make it there in ½ an hour. What is your average speed?
13
Calculating average speed
Average Speed = distance divided by time. Average Speed = 5 miles/.5 hours Average speed = 10 miles/hour We could have measured speed in miles per minute but since we usually use miles per hour it makes more sense.
14
Practice calculating average speed
A bird flies at 15 m for 10 seconds, 20 m for 10 seconds and 25 m for 5 seconds. What is the bird’s average speed? Hint: First calculate his total distance. Then calculate his total time. Then divide.
