1 What is Irony?

2 Irony It’s funny! It’s unexpected. It sometimes creates suspense.
It’s like Cupid never falling in love.

3 What is Irony? Irony is a contradiction between what you expect to happen and what actually happens

4 The Big Picture

5 Verbal Irony Saying one thing, but meaning another. Tone of sarcasm
EXAMPLES: Your teacher is collecting homework and not one person from one of the rows passed anything up. Your teacher said, “I just love when my students don’t do their homework!” You have a friend who is 6’7’’ and you call him, “Shorty”

6 More Examples of Verbal Irony
Your date to the dance shows up wearing ripped jeans and a stained shirt when he picks you up. You casually say, “Wow, I’m really glad you dressed up for our date!” Your friend ruins the ending of a movie for you and you say, “Thanks a lot!”

7 Dramatic Irony The reader/viewer knows something about the character’s situation that the character does not. The reader is aware of the irony The character is unaware of the irony Used to keep the audience actively engaged in the story

8 Dramatic Irony EXAMPLES:
In Cinderella, the prince goes searching for the “princess” who lost her slipper at the ball. The prince does not know that she is a poor girl, almost a slave to her stepsisters and stepmother. It is ironic because we know the owner of the shoe is Cinderella, a poor girl, but he thinks it is a girl that comes from great wealth. In scary movies, the audience knows where the “bad guy” is, but the character does not!

9 Dramatic Irony In all of the Friday the 13th movies, we know Jason is in the woods. The characters do not. When they go out into the woods we are afraid for them because we know that they are in danger. We scream for them to run, we get excited when they fall, we cringe when we know that Jason is right behind the tree. When watching a talk show, the audience knows why a person has been brought on the show. However, the person sitting in a chair does not know that he is going to be reunited with a former flame. This adds to the suspense and humor of the show.

10 Situational Irony Occurs when a situation turns out to be the opposite of what you thought it would be. Ice T (a famous 90’s rapper) released an album called “Cop Killa” – he now is an actor who plays a COP!

11 Situational Irony The teacher’s daughter is a High School drop out.
The mayor’s wife gets caught stealing. The chef won’t eat his/her own cooking. The barber always needs a hair cut himself.

12 Irony is a kind of a surprise
Irony is a kind of a surprise. It is the difference between what is expected to happen, and what actually does happen. Irony is like a glitch, a twist, or a last minute switch in the game. It is an interruption of events that cause an unexpected outcome. There are three types of irony: Verbal, Situational, Dramatic Review

13

14 Situational! We don’t expect a car that came to the shop to get flames to go up in FLAMES!

15 You are watching a horror movie and know that the boogey man is hiding in the closet. The main character does not know. Obviously the main character opens the closet door.

16 You, as an audience knows something that the main character does not.
Dramatic You, as an audience knows something that the main character does not.

18 Situational – We don’t expect a lifeguard who watches for sharks to be a shark!

19

20 Situational We don’t expect a man who falls over from thirst to do so right next to a water truck!

21

22 Verbal Regina (Abigail) says one thing, but means another.

23 George breaks a date with his girlfriend to go to a baseball game with his friends. He runs in to his girlfriend at the game with another guy!

Situational We don’t expect George to see his girlfriend with another guy!

27

Situational We don’t expect a FITNESS center to have an ESCALATOR!!

Situational We don’t expect a PEPSI driver to be drinking COKE!

31 You are sick and your brother comes down with the same illness three days later. He says, “Thanks a lot! I am so excited to be sick over the weekend.”

32 Verbal Obviously your brother is using sarcasm and isn’t excited to be sick!

33

34 Situational We don’t expect a man who is making fun of someone and calling them a moron – to be a moron them self! (he spelled it wrong)
