Morality (a.k.a. THE C.I.A. METHOD)
3-FONT PRINCIPLE Morality (a.k.a. THE C.I.A. METHOD)
2
JOURNAL QUESTION What is the difference between an armed robber who knocks you out and takes your money and an anesthesiologist (who also knocks you out and takes your money)? Explain as many differences that you can think of.
3
3-Font Principle CIRCUMSTANCE INTENTION ACT/OBJECT
We cannot have a true moral evaluation of a human action until the intention, act, and circumstances are considered together.
4
CIRCUMSTANCE The reality of the situation Who? What? When? Where? How?
5
INTENTION The internal part of the action.
It gives meaning to the action. It is the reason why we do something. It involves our goals or “ends” of the action
6
“Ends” by Everlast Chorus: Ends, some people will rob their mother
For the ends, rats snitch on one another For the ends, sometimes kids get murdered For the ends, so before we go any further I want my ends
7
I knew this cat named Darrell, he didn’t have a dollar He was Harvard material, Ivy League scholar Had a Ph.D., had an M.B.A. But now he’s waiting tables cause there’s rent to pay
8
Companies downsizing, inflations rising Cant find a job, he’s feeling kind of stressed Doesn’t even feel the effects when he says Forgot to count how many times he been blessed
9
So he falls off track, starts smoking the crack And once it hits his brain, it starts to chain react He sells the shirt off his back, shoes off his feet He’s losing all his teeth, now he’s out in the street
10
And all of sudden he’s like Jesse James Trying to stick up kids for their watches and chains But he’s from business school, and he’s nervous with the tool So he ends up on his back in a bloody pool For the ends...etc.
11
ACT/OBJECT The external part.
It is the material element of the moral action. This is the aspect that can be easily observed. Example: giving your mom a birthday card on her birthday
12
CONCLUSIONS A bad intention undermines and spoils a good act
Circumstances can increase or decrease the goodness/badness of an act A “morally good act” requires a good intention, circumstance and act/object
