Capitalism is the type of economy that currently exists in the United States. Capitalism has several key elements: Private ownership of the means of production, meaning private businesses and companies create and sell goods Profit, meaning goods are created and sold in order to make money Competition, meaning that when different companies all make the same product, the competition between the companies will create better products and cheaper prices Free market, meaning the government makes no rules controlling what businesses can do

5 Marx and Communism Karl Marx created a new government called communism in 1848 with his essay, The Communist Manifesto. Its goal was to solve many of the problems that capitalism caused. In each box below you will write down the 4 main ideas of communism Underneath each box, you will respond in 2+ sentences: Do you agree with the above statement? Why or why not?
