Propaganda is… Information put out by an organization or government to spread and promote a policy, idea, doctrine, or cause A specific type of message directly aimed at influencing the opinions or behavior of people Something we see EVERY DAY!!!

Speeches Commercials (radio, TV) Print Ads (magazines, fliers, posters) Internet ads Mass (SPAM!) Billboards/posters

1. Rhetorical Questions A question that does not require an answer- used to emphasize a particular point *Used to make someone think about something specific Example: All State Commercials: “Are you in Good Hands?”

2. Bandwagon The mentality that everyone is doing this, or everyone supports this cause/person, so you should too It tries to show that once you do this, you will have a lot of fun or gain a lot of advantages from this Example: “America’s largest network!”

3. Celebrity Testimonial *Celebrity endorsement of a philosophy, movement, candidate or product Causes more people to become supporters because they tend to trust the celebrity Example:

4. Plain Folk When a candidate or cause is identified with common people from everyday walks of life helps people relate to the candidate Example: “Sarah Palin’s Alaska” TV Show

5. Emotional Appeal Argument or plea that appeals to people’s emotions in order to cause a strong emotional reaction Example: Starving children commercials, animals in need, etc

6. Repetition Repeating one word or a well-known phrase/logo so that people remember it easily Example: What is being repeated in this ad?

Simple Phrases or Songs Using a catchy phrase (sometimes rhyming) or a song to make the message “stick” in a listener’s head Example: LUNA! “Do a Dollup!”

7. Fear Presenting a dreaded circumstance and then present the kind of behavior needed to avoid that horrible event Example:
