3. Who is MUT?
MUT is one of the six UoTs currently in existence in SA - one of the two in KZN.
MUT is located in the Umlazi township
1. First opened its doors to learning in 1979, as a technikon and assumed the university of technology status in 2008 – it was the last UoT to be established in SA.
2. It serves students primarily from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds. Student population mainly black

4. What is a UoT? University + technikon
du Pre’ (2005): “it is a new entity whose academic identity is both rooted in its historical focus as a technikon, and its aspiration to become a vibrant generator of new knowledge and practice in the region”
An institution that combines the research and knowledge-driven ethos of a university with the practical, problem-driven mindset of a technikon - provide technical and vocational education.

5. MUT vision and mission? Vision: a pre-eminent University of Technology
Mission: provide advanced, technology-based programmes and services that are
career- and
business-oriented in the broad fields of engineering, natural and management sciences
Career oriented programmes: train students for the world of work.
Business oriented programmes: Recipients trained for the world of unemployment and despair – Information Age
Three core functions: Teaching and Learning, Applied Research and Community Engagement.
Mission: for the upliftment of talented but predominantly disadvantaged individuals
Career Oriented: Achieved through combining theory-based teaching with practice learning in the workplace
Inf Age: which is characterised by a marked decline in the number of corporate employers
Modern education is a product of the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. Because the capitalists who owned corporations needed a literate and skilled workforce, they used the power of capital to influence the purpose of modern education: that is, to make it a system whose primary aim was the production of workers

Entrepreneurial Skills; and
Applied Learning.
