3 Science and Religion In 1859 Charles Darwin published ‘The Origin of Species’ this outlined the idea that all life had gone through a process of evolution; stating that everything had evolved from a more primitive state. Tricky: What do you think ‘primitive’ means? Trickier: Why might this idea contradict religious attitudes? Trickiest: What impact do you think Darwin had on Victorian Society?

4 Why might this create a feeling of uncertainty?
Dual Identity In 1888, the notorious Jack the Ripper presented the idea of the duality of human nature. There was discussion about the murderer being highly educated, or even of royal birth. This hidden savagery of mankind was an idea closely connected with ‘The Origin of Species’ as it reflected the idea that man could also have a secret, animalistic nature. Why might this create a feeling of uncertainty?

5 Numbered Heads On your tables, number yourselves 1-4.
On the next slide you will be shown some discussion points. After a few minutes, I will choose a number. That number in each group will share their team’s thoughts with the class.

6 Numbered Heads Do humans have a drive towards self destruction? Where is destructive behaviour evident today? How do individuals/ society deal with their destructive impulses? In your table groups, discuss the questions above, be ready to feedback through numbered heads.

7 3,3,1 Write three sentences about how Victorian society is uncertain. Think about the changes they are facing. Select three words from your three sentences that you believe are the most important make sure you explain your reasons. Finally, select the most important word and share with your partner.
