4. Economic Boom of the 1920’s
During the 1920’s, the American economy was booming after WWI!!!
The stock market was a bull market- a period of rising stock prices
America was in a consumer revolution- new, affordable goods were available to the public
Buying on margin- purchasing stock on credit

5. Modern Economy
Assembly Line- businesses started using interchangeable parts making it easier to produce goods in large numbers
Made products cheaper for consumers
Model T- first car produced through an assembly line making it much cheaper and more affordable for Americans
Pioneered by Henry Ford
More Americans now had access to transportation

18th Amendment- Outlawed the sale and production of alcohol
Prohibition- Period in America History when alcohol was illegal

8. Effects of Prohibition
Speakeasies- Underground bars where alcohol was secretly bought and drank
Bootlegging- The illegal production of alcohol

Traditionalism- the upholding of tradition, especially so as to resist change
Want to keep things the way they are
Modernism-a style or movement that aims to break with traditional ideas
Believe that change is good
These two ideas clashed during the 1920’s

Teacher in Ohio went on trial because he was teaching evolution in school
Theory of evolution contradicts the religious principle of creationism
Traditionalism vs Modernism
Clarence Darrow represented teacher and argued FOR teaching of evolution
William Jennings Bryan argued AGAINST it

Flappers- women who challenged social norms by dressing in short shirts and short hair
Nineteenth Amendment- Women’s suffrage (right to vote)

17. The Jazz Age Music style that was a symbol of the 1920’s
It was a demonstration of the depth and richness of African-American culture
Originated in the south

18. A New “Black Consciousness”
After World War I, the African American community sought to find the solution to the racial problems of the United States
Marcus Garvey- leads “Back to Africa” movement promoting black pride and a separation from the white community

19. Great Migration
Many African-Americans moved north to escape the South in hopes of finding a better life

20. Harlem Renaissance
Harlem Renaissance- African American artists, poets, and novelists celebrated African- American culture and explored questions of race in America
