Our students have been asking to go outside for recess. This time of the year it gets tricky with the weather and making sure everyone has the proper “gear”. I told the kids that if everyone had their snow attire and the weather wasn’t too cold, we would make an attempt every Friday to play outside. They are very excited at this possibility (probably a bit more than I  ). If you could please send in snowpants, mittens/gloves, hats and winter coats with students each Friday, it would be greatly appreciated. The nurse does have some extra items for students who forget, but certainly not enough to outfit the class. Please feel free to keep any extra items here at school, or if need be, students can bring items back and forth. Thank you !
OUR WEEK AT A GLANCE:
Reading- This week’s focus was on noticing the common text structures found in nonfiction texts (description, cause/effect, compare/contrast, problem/solution, and sequence). Students learned that by identifying these structures, they are better able to pull out important information. They used this knowledge to teach their topic to their peers during Reader’s Workshop this week.
Writing- Students began to think in depth about their main characters in their Realistic Fiction pieces. They brainstormed internal & external traits that will contribute the their storyline and also began drafting scenes that would show their character’s motivation and desires. Students understand that a reader must feel connected to the character in order for the piece to be strong and worthwhile.
Math- We continue learning strategies for multiplication which include rounding, estimating, and compensation. We will be wrapping up this unit next week prior to break.
Social Studies- Our Native American Unit continues. Students are working on learning essential vocabulary. This week, we created a visual glossary of words to support our understanding.
