3 Copy out the sentences below and underline where personal pronouns have been used.
He went to the shop. He bought some sweets. After he had spent all his money, he went home. He saw his friend on the way home. She was called Sarah.

4 Change the sentences below so that that they just contain personal pronouns.
John and Eric went to the seaside. Frank and I met them there. John wanted an ice-cream. Eric wanted fish and chips. As none of us could decide, John and I went to the chip shop and Frank and Eric went to the ice-cream parlour.

5 Why do you use pronouns? Butterflies live only short lives. Butterflies flower and flutter for just a few glorious weeks, and then butterflies die. To see butterflies, all of us have to be in the right place at the right time. And that’s how it was when I the storyteller saw the butterfly lion – I the storyteller happened to be in just the right place, at just the right time. I the storyteller didn’t dream him. I the storyteller didn’t dream any of it. I the storyteller saw the butterfly lion, blue and shimmering in the sun, one afternoon in June when I the storyteller was young. A long time ago. But I the storyteller don’t forget. I the storyteller mustn’t forget. I the storyteller promised them I the storyteller wouldn’t.

8 Your turn Task 1 Task 2 Write a description of what happened in your house at teatime last night. You cannot use ANY personal pronouns. You must write at least 5 sentences. Take the description you have just written. Now re-write it using personal pronouns. When do you have to use names? What happens if you take all the names out? Which text do you like better? Why?
