2. What is….
Service-Learning is … a teaching method under which students learn and develop through active participation in thoughtfully organized service that:
Meets a need in the community;
Relates to each student’s course work;
Involves reflection on the student’s part;
Creates a bridge between the university and the communities around it.

Internships
Volunteerism: refers to people who choose, on their own, to perform service to others without pay. Outcomes focused on the service to the community, and not to student learning.
Internships: specific type of academic training that happens within an organization outside the University. Can be paid or unpaid. Outcomes focused on the student learning and not on the benefits to the organization.
Service-Learning: particular emphasis is placed on the learning that occurs through service; connected to classroom objectives. Equal focus on the learning objectives and the service to the community.

The University of Idaho values engaged learning and has made outreach and engagement a central part of its mission and strategic plan.
The Service-Learning Center plays a central role in achieving the university’s mission to integrate outreach with teaching, research, and creative activity to solve real-world problems, while providing transformational experiences for learners.

= all of the above
These terms appear on survey students will take. They may also be useful terms to use for describing Engineering projects to laymen at Design Expo
