1
What is the structure and function of DNA?
2
How are genes and DNA organized?
Genes are sections of DNA that code information for making proteins. Chromosomes are made of DNA. Genes are located on chromosomes. Chromosomes are located in the nucleus of a cell.
3
What is DNA? A biomolecule (nucleic acid) made up of units called nucleotides. Full name: deoxyribonucleic acid
4
What does DNA do? Functions
carries genetic information from one generation to the next. Puts that information to work by determining traits (characteristics) Easily copied, passed each time a cell divides.
5
What is the structure of DNA?
The structure of DNA is called a double helix First described by James Watson & Francis Crick
6
What is a nucleotide? A unit or part of the DNA molecule
Nucleotides have three parts phosphate deoxyribose (sugar) nitrogenous base
7
Nitrogenous Bases Make up the code of DNA Four Types in DNA
Adenine (A) Guanine (G) Cytosine (C) Thymine (T)
8
Base Pairings A pairs with T G pairs with C
The bases are held together by hydrogen bonds
