READ the passage… Read the passage on pp 226 and 227 starting at “How could I have looked into it?” and ending at “Forgive you for what?” How does Ishiguro create atmosphere and develop character in this passage? 10 Marks.
4
Ideas for assessment Character: Kathy –reverts to younger version in contrast to opening of section 3. Note fear and rambling, story-telling with 2nd person focus. Imagery from film as link to reader. Violent imagery suggests expectation of Ruth’s reaction. Ruth – calm and reflective, not imposing her will but preparing for confession. Hardens but relaxes. Should help to put passage into context.
5
Assessment ideas Atmosphere of threat and fear.
Ruth hardens (and relaxes) Dialogue is clear and suggests important moment in K’s life Idea of triumph is linked to military images… suggests fear and trepidation in the face of significant threat K’s fear is clear as she describes her inner thoughts Tension relieved by being “thrown” by response and the limp response – lack of energy – relief.
