1 Asphalt Emulsion Manufacturing Association (AEMA) Online Certificate
Andrew Braham Associate Professor University of Arkansas (duvalasphaltproducts.com) AASHTO TSP•2 - Emulsion Task Force Indianapolis, IN November 28, 2018 1

2 Background Motivation: insufficient coverage of asphalt emulsions in undergraduate engineering curriculum AEMA hired University of Arkansas (UA) to produce three online asphalt emulsions certificate programs Introduction to Asphalt Emulsion Application of Asphalt Emulsion Manufacture of Asphalt Emulsion Content level assumes a bachelor’s degree in any subject area  April 2017  January 2018  August 2018 These courses are designed as on-demand and on-line: take any time, any place

3 Structure of each certificate
Ten lessons per certificate Each lesson has One Educational Brief ( pdf, can download, print) Five videos that review key points of EduBrief Quiz at end of lesson (unlimited tries) Two exams in each certificate Mid-term and final (can take each up to three times) Two essays in each certificate, ensures each participant is actively engaged 15 Professional Development Hours (PDH) awarded on completion

4 Why asynchronous online certificate?
Asynchronous: unscheduled, on-demand Highly specialized areas often not taught at undergraduate level For example, asphalt emulsions In past 5-10 years, movement toward online platform for workforce development Younger professionals prefer to be able to learn from anywhere at any time Content should be interactive Read, watch, quiz, write Very similar development process as South Carolina’s contract administration training program

5 Development process in six steps
Develop foundational information and content Establish development team Select development platform Determine delivery methods and stylistic elements Build modules Conduct pilot testing Advisory committee was established to provide feedback and approval in all six steps

6 1. Develop foundational information and content
Lesson Introduction to Asphalt Emulsion Application of Asphalt Emulsions Manufacturing of 1 Introduction Asphalt emulsion review 2 Chemistry Preservation overview Manufacturing overview 3 Production Fog seal, tack coat, and prime coat Storage, piping, insulation of raw materials 4 Laboratory testing – Part 1 Chip seals Pumps, meters, and valves in asphalt production 5 Laboratory testing – Part 2 Slurry seal and microsurfacing Chemicals and additives 6 Grading Scrub seal and cape seal Soap production 7 Uses – Part 1 Cold In-place Recycling (CIR) / Full Depth Reclamation (FDR) Asphalt emulsion mill 101 8 Uses – Part 2 Cold Mix Asphalt (CMA) Milling asphalt emulsion 9 Uses – Part 3 Hot In-place Recycling (HIR) and Ultra-Thin Lift Overlay Storage and delivery 10 Manufacture Patching and crack seal Quality control testing Learning objectives also key

7 1. (cont) Some example learning objectives
Introduction to Asphalt Emulsion: Grading Application of Asphalt Emulsions: Scrub seal and cape seal Manufacturing of Soap solution production 1 Recall the three standard specifications for asphalt emulsion Determine proper usage of scrub seal and cape seals List the components of soap solutions 2 Review the structure of a grading specification Identify material section of scrub seal and cape seals Describe special considerations for each component of soap 3 Grade an anionic asphalt emulsion Examine design strategies of scrub seal and cape seals Identify the steps in the proper sequence to prepare a soap solution 4 Verify the grade of a cationic emulsion Understand construction of scrub seal and cape seals Compare soap production in the lab, in a batch plant, and in a continuous plant 5 Grade a polymer modified asphalt emulsion - Step 1 included a technical advisory group

8 2. Establish development team
Funding and technical review panel Technical content Instructional design

9 3. Select development platform: Blackboard
Next lesson opens upon passing quiz, exam, or submitting essay

10 4. Determine delivery methods and stylistic elements
EduBriefs: Print and read – 100+ pages of text Videos reinforce EduBrief highlights Content formatting consistent: red and yellow colors with UA and AEMA logos

11 Multiple external and internal iterations
5. Build modules Utilized several existing sources of information Basic Asphalt Recycling Manual, Shell Bitumen Handbook, Asphalt Emulsion Technology, and Bitumen Emulsions all heavily referenced Technical writer editor reviewed EduBrief draft External technical review committee approved EduBriefs and videos Industry and government representatives Global Campus built lessons into Blackboard Multiple external and internal iterations

12 The six steps provided a solid platform for certificate development
6. Pilot testing Group of volunteers performed soft rollout Questionnaire after each lesson Completion time, quantity and quality of material, functionality of Blackboard, etc. Ensured that Technical content correct Length of each lesson appropriate Blackboard working as designed The six steps provided a solid platform for certificate development

13 Please spread the word!
