3 Treblinka In 1941, the Nazis built a labour camp near to the small Polish village of Treblinka. Treblinka was located in north-east Poland, around 100 kilometres from Warsaw. The labour camp was near a forest. It was open from the autumn of 1941. Among the first prisoners to arrive at the camp were around 1,000 Poles and Jews. These prisoners were used as slave labour, felling trees and working in a nearby quarry.

Once the main building work was completed, Dr Irmfried Eberl was appointed Commandant of the new camp. The first transport arrived at Treblinka II on 23 July 1942.
