SS 10: Ms. Pasichnyk: pp. 6-13

2 What is geography? *Study of the combination of physical geography ______________________________ and human geography ______________________________ So, this unit will look at how human’s interact with each other, how they affect and are affected by the land (p. 6). Ms. Pasichnyk will share her personal experience about the above Activity: with 1-2 students think & talk about a time that the weather, climate, landscape or ocean affected something you were doing.

PLACE: PHYSICAL & CULTURAL CHARACTERISTICS REGIONS MOVEMENT OF PEOPLE, IDEAS & OBJECTS HUMAN/ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTION

6 LOCATION Absolute location: the exact location measured using latitude (distance north or south of equator) and longitude (distance west or east of Prime Meridian) Relative location: i.e. Port Moody High School is about a 5 minute drive from Coquitlam Center

#1: Discuss the below with 2-3 people. How many provinces or territories have you travelled in? What ocean and two rivers are closest to us today? #2: Map skills and assignment

8 Place: Physical & Cultural Landscapes
Physical landscape: Cultural landscape: As we go through this course, think about how the physical and cultural landscapes are influenced by and affected by each other.

9 Regions Help geographers organize info.
There are many different regions in geography i.e. “coast”, “Okanagan”, “South Asia”, We will soon learn about the Physical Regions of Canada The Okanagan

10 Movement of People, Ideas & Objects
How do people share information between friends, cities, countries? Talk about & write about it! Globalization: is the process of many things allowing for rapid movement of information, ideas, fads, etc.

11 Human/Environmental Action
What causes changes to the natural landscape? Think about what is happening in the area east of us by the new Walmart, Shoppers Drugmart; up Coast Meridian close to David. Talk about it! What things do you do everyday that change the natural landscape? New housing on Burke Mountain
