2 Grace Hopper, who? Born December 9, 1906 Joined the Navy (1943)
Died January 1, 1992 Joined the Navy (1943) Retired in 1986 with the rank of Rear Admiral Worked on the Mark I (1944) Mark I was a ginormous calculator

3 WAS SHE WELL KNOWN? Until the late 1990s Hopper wasn’t well know She is rarely mentioned in any public form until 1970 WHY?!?!?!?!?!

4 POSSIBLE WHY SHE WASN’T WELL KNOWN
Manhattan Project : secret group that designed and built atomic bombs Hopper inputted a set a mathematical equations into the Mark I She didn’t know what they were being used for because of security reasons 1945: atomic bombs were dropped in Hiroshima and Nagasaki

5 OUCH! Hopper’s contributions to the atomic bombings weighed heavily on her After Hopper was forced to retire She had a bout with alcoholism After she was arrested for drunk and disorderly conduct Checked herself into rehab

6 Moving on With Life Created the first working compiler (1952)
