Strategy C2: Career Pathways Create linkages between academic and career fields to provide clearly defined career pathways that encourage and support a lifetime of educational and career advancement opportunities. Build on specific pathways initiatives to improve ongoing coordination and collaboration across academic, career/technical, and economic development programs.

Initiative: Best Practices Build on existing models –Collect and disseminate best practices. –Develop new programs for enhancing the career pathways approach in high growth, high wage sectors of the economy.

Initiative: Ladders of Opportunity Secure funding to implement the career ladders concepts and practices from BOG Ladders of Opportunity (refer to APG for C1 to leverage efforts.) Create strategies to align curriculum with industry, education, and workforce agencies. –Provide comprehensive work and career preparation that incorporates basic skills and applied education. –Create pathways for students to combine work and education. –Track student progress.

Initiative: Bridge Programs Create bridge programs to prepare low- skilled Californians to succeed in community colleges and access employment in high wage, high growth sectors. –Build on partnerships with workforce, social service, adult education, and industry to expand the reach, scope, and funding of college-centered, industry-driven career pathways.

C2 Action Recommendations Expand college capacity to develop and offer career pathways programs; provide seed funds to each college Establish and fund a practitioner-based career ladders technical assistance capacity Review and incorporate pathways approach into existing programs and funding streams Address policy barriers to career pathway development Develop and fund large scale, regional demonstration Bridge program projects
