3 Odyssey and Argument Week 5
Epic Hero Odyssey and Argument Week 5

4 Respond: How do you react when you see someone who appears to be homeless?

5 How did the Greeks react?

6 Debate Day: All money we spend on luxuries (things we don’t need) should be given away to the poor

7 Claims, Backings & Warrants
Eight Groups of Two (2) 4 Aff: Yes, we should give all of our “luxury money” to the poor. 4 Neg: No, we should not give all of our “luxury money” to the poor. Each group gets a claim with backing and warrants for their side. Each group gets a counter argument sheet to take notes.

8 Notes Sheet (for Rebuttal):
What “they” claim Counter Argument EX. Notes from other side Thesis: We should ban video games because they make kids violent. Claim: Children mimic what they see Backing: If they play a video game like Grand Theft Auto, they will try to steal, run people over, and kill women. Ex. Response Children do not mimic everything they see when they have parents who monitor their viewing and hold expectations for their behavior. TV shows and movies are also violent, and are rated, like video games. It is a parent’s responsibility to monitor what the child watches or plays, and discuss with them how to appropriately handle real-life situations. What did you write down? Your Turn!

9 Rebuttal: Using the Counter Argument
State the opposing team’s claim: My opponent says kids mimic what they see, like violent video games. Say where they went wrong, and your counter argument: But we say children do not mimic everything they see when they have parents who monitor their viewing and hold expectations for their behavior. TV shows and movies are also violent, and are rated, like video games. It is a parent’s responsibility to monitor what the child watches or plays, and discuss with them how to appropriately handle real-life situations. Restate your original point Instead, we believe that a better point is playing video games can be educational…

10 So what does this mean for writing?
If you add a counter argument paragraph into your essays, you make your argument stronger!
