1 I understand it is important to keep going when something is tricky
Year 2 – Solving problems I understand it is important to keep going when something is tricky © Leeds South and East CCG

2 Learning outcomes Knowledge Skills
I know how to play and work co-operatively with others I understand that people often need to play / work together to reach a shared outcome I can reflect on and celebrate my achievements, and identify my strengths and areas for improvements Children can explain a time they had to try really hard and how it made them feel when they did 2

3 How we will work together
Can you remember the ground rules we have already talked about, let’s take a minute to think about them Teacher notes Read these through with the children. Hopefully the ground rules will be displayed in the classroom already. 3

4 What do we already know? Group discussion
What do we have to do in order to achieve? Group discussion Discuss as a class and record children’s ideas. 4

5 Let’s get started How can working as a team be useful?
How can you work well as a team? Record children’s ideas 5

6 Group challenge Work in a group to complete your challenge 6
Read the challenge cards and ensure children understand what to do. They work as a group to complete their challenge. Bring the children together to discuss strengths and areas for development. You could give each group the same challenge to compare different methods. You may want to write your own so that they fit with your topic or the classes interested/resources etc. What worked well? What did you need to do to be successful? What could you improve on next time? 6

7 Perseverance Watch the film clip 7
Watch film clip – what was Cody’s dream? Why did he keep trying? Watch the film clip 7

8 Sesame Street Watch the film clip 8
OR What is the message from the song? What things were discussed that people find difficult? Has anyone has the same kind of difficulties? Watch the film clip 8

9 Difficulties What do you find difficult?
What have you had to try really hard to do / achieve? Children explain a time when they had to try really hard to achieve something. Children discuss how this made them feel. Ensure that children know that everyone finds things difficult at times. We are all different and therefore what one person finds difficult could be very different to what another persons finds difficult. Share your own thoughts with the class so that they are aware that adults find things difficult too. Discuss the word self-esteem so that children understand what it means. Explain that finding things difficult can be hard for those children that have low self-esteem and therefore it is really important for children to understand that it is ok to find things difficult. 9

10 Strengths and areas for development
What are your strengths? What are you proud of? What do you need to improve on? Share a strength of your own with the class. Explain that we all have things that we are good at. Sometimes that can be academic such as story writing, times tables etc, it could be a sporting or artist talent or it could be being a good listeners etc. Ask children to share their strengths. Share something that you feel you need to work on yourself. Ask children to help think about what could do to improve. Children record their own strengths and areas that they want to improve on. These can then be referred to at a later date. 10

11 How has our learning progressed?
Who would like to share their strengths and areas for development with us? Invite children to share their thoughts with the class. Ask the class to think about what steps could be taken to help them improve. Children could then add these steps to their sheets. Does anyone have the same or similar targets? How can we work together to help people achieve their targets? Remind children of the group challenge. What did you need to do to overcome difficulties? Keep using the words gathering after watching the film clip – perseverance, determination etc 11

12 Taking the learning away
Ask people at home what they find difficult What could you do together to help improve? Share your difficulties with others so that they can help you improve 12
