1 Text Structure

2 Essential Questions How does the author structure information within a text? How does the text structure affect the information presented? Why is it helpful to know the structure of the text before you begin reading?

3 Vocabulary text structure- How the writer organizes the content in texts. Such as; chronological/sequential, cause and effect, compare and contrast, description, and problem and solution.

4 Launching the Thinking
Read the following paragraph on the next slide and discuss collaboratively with your group. As a collaborative group, identify the text structure using evidence (key words) from the text. Next, create a graphic organizer using chart paper. Each collaborative group will share their findings.

5 Launching the Thinking
Through the ages, Pennsylvania has seen many interesting events. The state was founded in 1681 by William Penn. Later, Pennsylvania was the site of important Revolutionary War battles. After that, Pennsylvania was home to new factories during the Industrial Revolution. Today, Pennsylvania continues to make history.

6 What Did Your Collaborative Group Find?
The paragraph has a text structure of chronology/sequence because the events were completed in a specific order. Key Words: through the ages, founded in 1681, later, after that, and today. chrono = time, logic = order Authors use chronological order to explain how things happen in order of time. While reading an informational text, what can tip us off to let us know the organizational structure is chronological? The author uses words such as: first, then, last, next, finally, and most importantly, chronological order will more than likely have some sort of reference to time or date!

7 Link As you listen to “A True Patriot” continue to listen for “text structure words”. Knowledge of text structure is critical for reading to learn. By identifying the organizational structures of texts, you can observe how authors arrange ideas and determine which kinds of structures are used to interrelate ideas.
