1 Estimating Digits in quotients

2 Estimation is finding a number that is close enough to the right answer.
You are not trying to get the exact right answer. Concentrate on the first digit of each number ... it will have the biggest impact on the answer. You can then look at the other digits to make small adjustments to your answer. Round the numbers up or down

3 To estimate, we round. *Remember: 5 or more, UP the score 4 or less, let it REST! Estimate the following: Nearest ten: Nearest hundred thousands: 617, ,872 Nearest thousands: 617, ,872

4 Module 2, Lesson 12, page 50 We can use estimation to quickly help us find an approximate answer. 2,970 ÷ *First, round each number off to the largest place of that number. 3,000 ÷ 10 *Next, cross off the SAME amount of zeros in each number. 300 ÷ 1 = 300 *Last, divide. You now have an estimated answer! Use a calculator to find the quotient. Compare the quotient to the estimate.

5 Estimate the following quotients.
4,752 ÷ 12 11, 647 ÷ 19 40, 644 ÷ 18 49,170 ÷ 15 You try! Complete p. 53 and 1-5 on p. 54.
