1 Section 4.8 Long Division and Synthetic Division

2 In this section, you will learn how to divide a “polynomial” by a “binomial”
Long Division Straight Forward Long Synthetic Division Fast & Easy 2 Small exceptions Division Statement

3 I) Review: Long Division
Ex: Divide the Following Using Long Division Dividend Dividend Divisor: Divisor Quotient: Quotient: Remainder: Remainder: Division Statement:

4 II) Long Division with Polynomials

7 III) Synthetic Division:
Synthetic Division is an alternative to Long Division: Used for dividing polynomials Take the coefficients of your dividend: Place the divisor in front:

8 Practice: Take the coefficients of your dividend:
Place the divisor in front:

9 Two Reminders with Synthetic Division
i)If the Dividend is missing a term (skip in the exponents), replace missing term with coefficient of zero 2. If Divisor has a coefficient for the x-term, solve for “x” from the divisor. Do synthetic division. At the end, divide the quotient by the coefficient in the divisor.

10 Practice: Take the coefficients of your dividend:
Place the divisor in front: For the Quotient, divide all the coefficients by 2
