Algebra 1 Section 1.6

Division A quotient is the answer to a division problem
The dividend is the number being divided into equal parts by the divisor.

Division Division is the inverse operation of multiplication.

Division If the divisor and dividend have like signs, the quotient is positive. If the divisor and dividend have unlike signs, the quotient is negative.

Example 1 a. 14 ÷ 2 = ____ b. = ____ 7 -8 c. 105 ÷ (-21) = ____
-72 9 -8 c. 105 ÷ (-21) = ____ d = ____ -5 -864 -36 24

Division With Zero Zero, divided by a nonzero number, is equal to zero. Division by zero is undefined.

Definition Reciprocals (multiplicative inverses) are two numbers whose product is 1.

Properties of Multiplication
Multiplicative Inverse Property: The product of a number and its reciprocal is one. a • = • a = 1 1 a 1 a

Definition Division is defined as multiplication by the reciprocal of the divisor. For any real numbers a and b, b  0, a ÷ b = = a • a b 1

Example 2 4 5 9 10 a ÷ = 2 × 4 5 10 9 = 8 9 1

Example 3 2 3 4 b = 1 × 2 3 1 4 = 1 6 2

Example 4 Divide 1.26 by 0.3. 3 1 2 6
