What is a Cause? A cause is something that makes something else happen. It is why something happens.

An effect is what happens
What’s the effect? An effect is what happens

Cause and Effect Clue words such as because, so, and cause sometimes signal a cause- effect relationship. Sometimes you must figure out for yourself that one thing causes another.

Primary and Secondary Sources

Primary Sources Information that was created at the same time as an event or by a person directly involved in the event. Examples: Diaries, speeches, letters, official records, autobiographies

Secondary Source Gets information from somewhere else or by a person not directly involved in the event Examples: encyclopedias, textbooks, book reports

The main idea is the big point that the writer is communicating to the reader.
Often the reader can approach the main idea just by looking at the title. THE MAIN IDEA

Many paragraphs have topic sentences that indicate what their about.
Find the topic sentence in this paragraph: Homeless people have many problems. In winter, it’s hard to stay warm and it gets too hot in summer. It’s also hard to keep things safe without a home. Worst is the lack of privacy. The Topic Sentence
