STEP 1: “Throwing your hat in the Ring”

STEP 2: Primary Elections & caucuses
Held within each State
helps candidates to become known by the public
these elections are held by political parties to determine the party’s pick for the general election (narrowing it down to one candidate in each party)
a caucus is a meeting of members of a particular political party
STEP 3: National Convention or Nominating Convention
official meeting of a political party to officially select the political party’s presidential candidate
held in the summer before the general election
develops the party’s platform

Democratic Party-
Gov’t should help less fortunate people with social programs (use tax dollars $$ to do this)
Protect Civil Liberties
Most think gov’t should not be involved in personal decisions like abortion, marriage
Republican Party-
Individuals should be able to make their own decisions and take care of themselves/each other without gov’t interference
Gov’t should set boundaries on abortion, marriage
Gov’t should not be involved in improving the economy (private businesses & free market system are better)
Libertarian Party-
Believes in liberties, free enterprise & personal responsibilities
Personal issues-similar to Democrats
Economic issues-similar to Republicans
