Where do Ideas come from?
2
Dreams Sometimes a vivid dream can give us an idea for a story.
What vivid dreams have you had? Would they make interesting stories?
3
Stories from Other People
Sometimes friends and family members tell us a story about something that happened to them. With added details and twists, could their story make an interesting work of fiction? What stories from people you know could you embelish?
4
Words and Phrases Sometimes a word or sentence pops into our heads and gives us an idea. Ever have a sentence pop into your head that you thought would be great in a story? Ever thought up a word or short phrase that would make a great title?
5
What if…? Sometimes the best stories come from simply asking “What if…?” What kinds of “What if…?” questions can you come up with?
6
Your Assignment Make a list of intriguing titles.
Make of list of interesting sentences. Write down any interesting dreams you have had that would make good stories. Make a list of character names. Add descriptions or story ideas that go along with them. Make a list of interesting “What if…?” questions. Consider how you would answer them.
7
Pick One and GO! Choose one of the items from the brainstorming section. Write me a short story. Beginning, middle, and end…but no more than two pages (okay…I’ll give you three if you ask nicely) This will give me an idea of who you are as a creative story writer. No pressure. It just gives me a chance to see what direction I can and should take you.
