1 The Sweet Spot PBL AC Physical Science

2 GSSE S8P1. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about the structure and properties of matter. b. Develop and use models to describe the movement of particles in solids, liquids, gases, and plasma states when thermal energy is added or removed. c. Plan and carry out investigations to compare and contrast chemical (i.e., reactivity, combustibility) and physical (i.e., density, melting point, boiling point) properties of matter. d. Construct an argument based on observational evidence to support the claim that when a change in a substance occurs, it can be classified as either chemical or physical.

3 Problem You and your partners are opening a new candy stop, The Sweet Spot, at the Battery. You will make an infographic of the physical and chemical changes/properties, solubility and molecular models of the sugar that was created as you make your candy from beginning to end. Please provide a sample of your candy to the class.

4 Infographic g/how-to-create-an- infographic-and-other- visual-projects-in-5- minutes/ Or create your own by drawing it on butcher paper.

5 What to Include in Your Infographic
Ingredients for your candy with the chemical formula. Physical and Chemical Properties of your company’s candy. Physical and Chemical Changes that occurred while you were making your candy. Atomic model of sugar produced: sucrose, fructose and glucose. Discuss solubility as you made your candy.

6 Drawing of your candy. What was your design? How will you package it?
Construct an argument based on observational evidence from your candy making experience to support the claim that when a change in a substance occurs, it is classified as either chemical or physical. Use proper “candy” terminology such as crystalline, non-crystalline, caramelized . Here is an awesome site Candy - Sugar Syrup Temperature Chart Continued

7 Terminology to Include
Physical and Chemical Properties that apply i.e. viscosity, color, solid, liquid gas, boiling point, melting point, etc… Physical and Chemical Changes that apply i.e. combustibility Solubility – include solute and solvent
