Short term physical effects caused by alcohol: Blurred vision Slurred speech Heart and blood pressure increases Blood flow to the skin increases causing more rapid loss of body heat

5 1. BLACKOUTS – Blackouts are a period of time that the drinker cannot recall. THIS IS NOT THE SAME AS PASSING OUT!!! B.A.C. – Blood Alcohol Concentration WHAT AFFECTS IT? 1. Gender 2. Age 3. Weight/Height 4. Amt. of food in the stomach 5. Amt. Of alcohol consumed 6. Rate of consumption and absorption

6 3. ETHANOL – The name of the alcohol found in beverages.
In an hour the liver can break down ethanol alcohol 1 shot of alcohol, 1 glass of wine, and 1 can of beer. 5. HANGOVER – the physical symptoms associated with drinking too much alcohol. Ex. Nausea, upset stomach, headache, sensitivity to light and noise.

7 6. INHIBITIONS – the controls that people put on their emotions and behavior in order to behave in socially acceptable ways. When people drink they act differently than they normally would – louder, more outgoing, out of control. 7. TOLERANCE – when the body becomes accustomed to or builds up a resistance to a drug. You need more to receive the same feeling.

8 8. SYMPTOMS OF ALCOHOL WITHDRAWAL:
Shakiness Sleep problems Irritability Rapid heart beat Sweating 9. CIRRHOSIS – Liver disease that is caused by the over use of alcohol over a period of time. Useless scar tissue replaces normal liver tissue. Without a liver transplant severe Cirrhosis leads to DEATH

9 SYNERGISM – mixing of drugs causes the affects to be magnified
