9. In Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet interfering with fate has terrible consequences. Firstly, interfering with fate by rushing life’s events could end in tragedy. Friar Lawrence demonstrates this idea by advising Romeo against rushing his relationship with Juliet. Friar Lawrence says, “wisely and slow; they stumble that run fast” (2.3.94). In other words, don’t rush as it will never end well– in Romeo’s case, he and Juliet’s love ends in untimely death. Secondly, making snap decisions and ignoring the time needed to think things through can also have grave consequences. Romeo’s best friend, Mercutio, is murdered by Tybalt ( ). Enraged, Romeo kills Tybalt almost immediately and then says, “O, I am fortune’s fool!” ( ). He realizes that he interfered with fate by making a snap decision and committing murder. As a result, not only is he banished from Verona where his wife is, he is also a wanted criminal. In Romeo and Juliet, interfering with fate leads to terrible consequences.
