4 the beginning and Self-Control at
The placement of Love at the beginning and Self-Control at the end of “Fruit of the Spirit” list demonstrate the importance of both qualities.

5 “root fruit” that all the other fruit grow out from.
Love is the “root fruit” that all the other fruit grow out from. Self-Control is to be the ongoing goal of every Spirit-led believer.

6 “Sophroneo” in Greek: Sound Judgment, Sober thinking
Having a “God-controlled” mind Despite emotions or temptations, I make my choices to honor God.

7 “Egkrateia” in Greek: Temperance with Inner Strength
Restraining Passions & Appetites “A Healthy Regulation of Desires & Appetites, preventing any excess”

8 The Greeks thought that all things (good or bad things) should be done in moderation, and not to excess. “Biblical Temperance” means Spirit-led moderation in all good things (which we have freedom to choose) and total abstinence from all sinful things.

9 whose walls are broken down
Proverbs 25:8 “Like a city whose walls are broken down is a person who lacks self-control.”

11 Most people struggle with self-control issues in
4 main areas: Body Thoughts Emotions Speech

12 Physical Temptations:
Gluttony - Food - Drunkenness Laziness Sexual Immorality or Impurity

13 1 Corinthians 6: 19-20 19 “Do you not know that
your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your bodies.”

14 Psalm 101:3 Psalm 19:14 “I will not look with approval
on anything that is vile. I hate what faithless people do;     I will have no part in it.” Psalm 19:14 “My eyes are ever on the Lord,     for only He will release my feet from the snare.”

15 “Gateways” to our Mind Eyes - TV/Movies/Ads - Internet/Gaming Ears
- Media/News - Music/Gossip Memories

16 2 Corinthians 10:5 “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, & we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” Psalm 19:14 “May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your Sight,     O Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.”

17 Emotions “Gone Wild” Fear Anger Resentment Bitterness Self-pity

18

19 James 3: 9-10 9  “With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse human beings, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.”

20 No matter where we are in our
walk with Jesus, each one of us likely needs to “grow” in one of these areas of self-control more than others. The Greeks said: “Know thyself.” Jesus commands us: “Control yourself.” * With the help of the Holy Spirit we can!
