What is the purpose of the Declaration of Independence? – declare the United States free and independent; cut ties with Great Britain
Why was the Battle of Kettle Creek important? – took place in Georgia; victory for United States; boosted morale; allowed the US to capture badly-needed weapons and supplies
Why couldn’t the Continental Army pay their soldiers? – there was no national currency; when they reached out to the states for help, the states ignored the request or said no
Did the Articles of Confederation establish a weak or a strong national government? - weak

4. Review: Constitutional Convention
Last week we discussed the Constitutional Convention.
Three branches of government: Executive, Legislative, and Judicial
Legislative branch would be bicameral: Senate, with 2 reps from each state, and House, with membership based on each state’s population.
South had a larger population because of slaves; delegates from the North didn’t want the slave population to count.
Finally, they settled on the three-fifths compromise: Each slave would count as 3/5 of a person, for purposes of the population count.

5. Westward Expansion
SS8H4: Explain significant factors that affected westward expansion in Georgia between 1789 and 1840.
Explain reasons for the establishment of the University of Georgia, and for the westward movement of Georgia’s capitals.

6. Vocabulary
Institution – an organization, establishment, foundation, society, or the like, devoted to the promotion of a particular cause or program
Bankruptcy – utter ruin, failure; running out of money completely and being unable to pay your debts
Agriculture – the science, art, or occupation concerned with cultivating land, raising crops, and feeding, breeding, and raising livestock; farming
Malaria – a disease you get from a mosquito bite; it causes chills, fever, and sweating
